GUMS AND RESINS SUB-SECTOR- OPPORTUNITY

  1. The geographical coverage of the gums and resins five tree species in  which is over 70%  of the total land mass in Kenya.
  2. Complete feasibility study of gums and resins in the  12 counties of Asal.
  3. Inventory of all the products of the gums and resins completed.
  4. Awareness creation in   12 counties in Asal completed.

  6. Favorable rainfall patterns, Unlike other 15 producing countries in Africa. Kenya has 9 months harvesting season except April, November and December during rainy in a year.
  7. Gums and resins harvested during dry season of the year when the pastoralist have little pasture for their animals.
  8. INTER Africa have done private research on product development on value addition on gums and resins than any other company in Kenya.
  9. TOTs (Training of Trainers) done in some parts of Asal counties.
  10. Environmental friendly harvesting of gums and resins. No tree species are cut down for the purpose of getting the product.
  11. Gums and Resins harvested parallel to livestock grazing in the field by the pastoral community.
  12. Organized teams camp for 14 days in the bush to collect gums and resins as in the case of North Eastern Province.

  15. Purchase of gums and resins business for MANY YEARS  in North Eastern Asal  counties though done by few un professional  business but shows the history of the economic value in it.
  16. Establishment of an NGO-SALTLICK in Isiolo for the purpose of the off take of the gums and resins and value addition in Northern Kenya in 1994.
  17. Construction of a factory in Wajir by ENNDA- Ewaso Nyiro North Development Authority
  18. Construction of gums and resins collection and quality control stores in Isiolo- Nontudo, Oldonyiro, Chumvi Yare, Daaba and Baranbathe. Samburu-Sereolipi. Marsabit-Merrille and Laisamis.
  19. Research and development in soil science, tree species, gum Arabic specification, product development. Research Institute. Glyn University in UK and KU.
