The sustainable supply chain and marketing is hindered by other unprofessional companies, middlemen who have no knowledge and completely don’t know from which are the tree species gum Arabic and resins  are harvested, from and technically  advice their agents and harvesters despite getting a lot of donor funds which are misplaced. Internationally this gives Kenya gum Arabic and resins a bad reputations and losing international market

ASAL’s Kenya’s Arid and Semi-arid lands are endowed with a rich diversity of plant resources especially gums and resins. These are articles of commerce that can contribute to the living standards of local inhabitants and the region.

The region, which depends almost entirely on livestock production, is impoverished with poverty levels being among the highest in the country and during severe drought the clocks are completely turned anti-clockwise. Members of INTER Africa recognized the potential that exist in developing the off take of gums and resins as the right step –towards sustainable economic development of these arid and semi-arid of Northern Kenya. The main objective is to develop the off take of gums and resins and assist the social – economic development to poverty eradication through feasibility studies, awareness creations, extensive training on primary quality control – natural production(YIELD), tapping techniques ( tree management and increased productions),  harvesting and post – harvesting, handling, sorting and grading, storage, processing, packing and packaging and marketing. From the experiences where already gum Arabic are collected from very few trained communities they no longer cut trees for charcoal as they see the value for money of collecting gums and resins. Hence the program through the Company has also a big environmental positive impact through protection, conservation and landscape restoration.
